“Our Blues” revolves around a group of people trying to find love and happiness on the coastal Island of Jeju. Let’s dive into the reasons why this drama should be on your watchlist. Very few spoilers are included.
1. A Unique Countryside-Set Story
There are not many K-Dramas set in the countryside so viewers can also hope to see new and fresh stories from the drama. The premise of “Our Blues” may seem like “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, a story about a protagonist from the city going to the countryside. However, in reality, it is not. The first three episodes of “Our Blues” focus around a broken protagonist Choi HanSoo who achieves little in his life and decides to be transferred back to his hometown to find comfort and also money to fund his daughter’s golfing activities. Choi Han Soo is vert unlike the lead character of “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, Yoon HyeJin, a successful dentist who decided quickly to open her own clinic in a small town because she just had an incident with her boss. To summarize, HyeJin (from “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”) has confidence, while HanSoo (from “Our Blues”) does not. This also shifts the tone of the story to a more melancholic vibe. Also, we will see if the story continues with HanSoo as the main protagonist or focus will be passed on to other characters like Park JungJoon, Lee YoungOk, Lee DongSeok, or Min SeonAh. Viewers can then see much more diverse stories of people living in Jeju.
2. Start-studded Cast
It is undeniable that the cast for this drama is full of powerhouse actors and actresses ranging from Lee ByungHun (“Iris”, “Mr. Sunshine”, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”) to Shin MinA ( “Tomorrow With You”, “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha”, “Bittersweet Life”). Another cool fact is that Shin MinA and Lee ByungHun already acted together in the movie “Bittersweet Life” in 2005. But there is also another important fact about the cast of “Our Blues”. It is none other than Kim WooBin’s grand comeback to the small screen after he went on hiatus for 6 years to treat his cancer and overcame it with great strength and resilience. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see his healthy comeback.
3. Contrasting Characters
From the first several scenes, we can see the personality contrast between the two main characters. Park JungJun (portrayed by Kim WooBin) is a quiet person with serious eyes and he talks very little while working. On the other hand, Lee YongOk (Han JiMin’s character) is an outgoing and talkative person. She talks to everyone on the ship, from her colleagues to the captain.
4. Undeniable Chemistry
The car at the crossroad scene between Choi HanSoo and Jung EunHee reveals that they had a strong friendship when they were young. However, two flashback scenes to their adolescent years also reveal that HanSoo once stood up for her but didn’t express his interest towards her. On the contrary, EunHee has a strong affection for him that she still carries on till the present day. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between a married man and woman of unrequited love develops.
5. Cool Facts about Korean Culture
The second scene in the first episode explores Jeju’s unique way of fishing by the “Hanenyeo” or “sea woman” in English. Hanenyeos are women from Jeju Island who dive deep into the ocean to harvest seafood such as mollusks, seaweed, shells, etc. One of the main characters Lee YongOk (portrayed by Han JiMin) also continues this interesting tradition.
